A Thought to Carry with You
The Welsh-born patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, was sold into slavery as a teenager. He turned to religion for solace and later established monasteries, schools, and churches in Ireland, using the three-leaf shamrock to help explain the Trinity. His "Shield Prayer" twines Celtic imagery together with Christian themes:
"I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun's life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks."
As we celebrate St. Patrick's Day this week, may you find that good luck comes to you as gently and benevolently as in Robert Herrick's poem:
"So good luck came, and on my roof did light
Like noiseless snow, or as the dew of night:
Not all at once, but gently, as the trees
Are by the sunbeams tickled by degrees."
